The L-shaped piece is very easily bent when tightening the shift drum bolt. When bent, the transmission won't shift into all the gears, etc. The fix is to remove the piece, flatten it back out, and then resinstall. Of course, a new one could always be fit. To prevent damage, remove it before tightening the shift drum bolt.
