Do not base any vehicle information on Titles, Registration, or any other Paperwork. The data is only to come from the motorcycle itself.

Why? Well, for several reasons.

  1. Titles and registrations are notoriously inaccurate. Official paperwork often reflects the date the vehicle was sold, not the date the vehicle was manufactured. This has led to all kinds of claims about people owning, for example, a Ambassador. To be blunt, we don't care about the date when the vehicle was originally titled. All that information reflects is how long the dealer held on to the motorcycle before it was sold. I've seen Moto Guzzi V1000 G5 motorcycles sold (never titled) in . That is certainly a long time to hold on to a motorcycle, but it does not make that motorcycle a model. What we do care about is when Moto Guzzi manufactured the motorcycle. Hence our insisting that the data be pulled directly from the motorcycle.
  2. We also do not know how long it took to transport the motorcycle from Italy to the dealer. Did it take one month? Two? Three? I have no idea. Some people will claim that because their bike was manufactured in December of , that it should really be considered a model because there is no way it could have reached its destination and been sold in . While I may agree with how long it took to transport the motorcycle to its destination, claiming an Eldorado is a model when it was manufactured in December of is not very useful information.
  3. In contrast to Detroit where model years are generally very specific, Moto Guzzi model years are much more fuzzy. Rather than waiting to make a change until the next official model year, rolling changes using the parts at hand are the norm. It is much more helpful to disregard the concept of model years altogether...and only concentrate on the model and when it was manufactured in relationship to other like models.
  4. Note: Most V700 models did not come with VIN plates riveted to the steering head. Instead, the information was stamped directly into the steering head.
